How a Database Review Can Help You

While hand history reviews can be an effective way of studying – discussing your thought process and how you approach various spots at different stages of the tournament – it can also leave a lot unexplored. If you’re reviewing a deep run, by its nature, you likely ran well and faced a high distribution of favourable situations; there’s no guarantee that any key learning spots will come up. Even a long hand history may last 500-1000 hands, of which many will be preflop folds or very standard spots, so your leaks may easily fly under the radar.

With a Database Review there is nowhere for your leaks to hide. Over large samples, it will become very apparent where the holes in your game are and where your win rate can be most drastically improved.

How Does a Database Review Work?

Your statistics will be reviewed in every area of the game tree from preflop to river. These statistics can be compared to GTO frequencies, statistics from the biggest winners, and pool tendencies to determine where you are underperforming in theory, and where you are missing out on big exploit opportunities. We can also filter for different situations to pinpoint exactly where you are going wrong based on stack size, board texture, bet sizing and more.

You will receive a video going through everything in detail with real marked examples from your own hands of where you could have approached the spot differently. You will also get a document summarising your leaks in order of importance. This can serve as the foundation for your next months’ study. For serious players, I recommend a Database Review every 3-6 months to make sure your improvement is consistent and your study efficient. One of the benefits of this method is that it is highly measurable. Each time, we can look back at what was highlighted in the previous review, and see how your statistics and win rate has improved in those areas.
